East
Greenland is an easy 2 hour flight from Reykjavík City Airport.
Stay on the island of Kulusuk or travel by helicopter to Ammassalik
for stays of two nights or more. Or book a combination visit to
the two towns.
Kulusuk
is a perfect place for a rendezvous with Greenland. Located on a
small island Kulusuk is a small island with an international airport
and a tiny village that clings to the rocky island above a glittering
sea of icebergs with dramatic mountain peaks as a backdrop.
Many
of the residents still survive by hunting. Kulusuk remains relatively
immune to Western influence though a nice, modern hotel with a pleasant
restaurant and fully licensed bar is available between the airport
and the village.
Coming
to the Ammassalik District you enter the heart of East Greenland's
exceptional beauty, one of the most beautiful and unspoiled arctic
areas in the world. The city of about 1800 inhabitants is known
as Tasiilaq and is located on Ammassalik Island. It is the largest
settlement in Eastern Greenland. Small colorful wooden houses are
scattered on the mountainsides, situated by an almost circular fjord
and surrounded by high mountains.
Tasiilaq
is a modern community with many of the modern amenities found elsewhere
in the world only on a limited scale. Traditional Inuit society
is present in many layers of society, making for an interesting
coexistence of new and old culture.
