Sample Fly/Drive West Iceland Extended Itinerary (10 days)

Visit the rugged West Fjords situated in the northwest corner of Iceland. This itinerary is suitable for June through mid-September travel and is particularly interesting for birders, hikers and those who wish to head off the beaten path.

Depart US to Keflavík on Icelandair.

Day 1 – Reykjavík
Arrive Keflavík, Iceland the next morning or on a late evening flight. Take FlyBus to accommodations in Reykjavík – Stay at accommodations ranging from 4-star hotels to charming guesthouses located in downtown Reykjavík. Private facilities and breakfast included.

Day 2 – Reykjavík – Golden Circle - Reykjavík
Take popular day tour in Iceland: The Golden Circle Super Jeep tour – the best way to get to know Iceland’s history, culture and geology before heading off on your own on day 3. Includes visits to hot springs, waterfalls, geysers and the mid-Atlantic ridge at Iceland’s famous Thingvellir National Park. Same overnight location in Reykjavík.

Day 3 – Snæfellsnes- Hellnar - Búðir
After breakfast, pickup rental car from your accommodations and checkout. Head north and west to Hellnar on south coast of Snæfellsnes peninsula (3-hour drive) and spend one overnight at Hótel Hellnar or Hótel Búðir situated on the southwest coast of the peninsula overlooking the ocean to the south and the mystical glacier to the north. Spend the afternoon getting acquainted with the region with a hike along the coast or a visit to the glacier.

Day 4 – Snæfellsnes - Stykkishólmur
Today drive to the north side of the peninsula with the quaint fishing village of Stykkishólmur as your destination. Overnight at Hótel Breiðafjörður or Stykkishólmur. On your way drive around the western end of the peninsula through Iceland’s newest National Park or drive over the mountains next to the glacier. 2-hour drive and plenty of time to stop along the way.

Day 5 – Stykkishólmur - Látrabjarg
Today you will take the ferry Baldur to Brjánslækur and then head out to Látrabjarg, the western most point in Europe and home to hundreds of puffin, certainly the best viewing area in Iceland for puffin-watching. Plan one overnight at the Breiðavík near the end of the road and providing the best access to the famous bird cliffs.

Day 6 – Látrabjarg - Ísafjörður
Today travel north through the western fjords visiting the small settlements that dot the fjord coasts including possible stops at Patreksfjörður, Bildudalur, Þingeyri and Flateyri. Stop at the spectacular waterfall Dynjandi. End your day at the capital of the western fjords - Ísafjörður and check in at Hótel Ísafjörður for a two-night stay.

Day 7 - Ísafjörður
Today is a free day to explore the region with several cruising options on Ísafjörður and local walking tours. Visit the local maritime museum. Take a short trip out to the town of Bolungarvík. Same overnight location.

Day 8 - Ísafjörður - Reykholt
Head east as you wend your way along beautiful and remote fjord coast lines back to the ring road. Visit the town of Hólmavík, home of Iceland's witchcraft museum. End your day in the Borgarfjörður region at Reykholt.

Day 9 - Reykholt - Blue Lagoon
Explore waterfalls, hot springs and the town of Borgarnes, home of the Iceland Settlement Museum, then head south to the Reykjanes Peninsula, skirting the capital, as you end you day at the Blue Lagoon for the last overnight in Iceland. Two accommodations are located within the Blue Lagoon complex. Enjoy a relaxing late evening dip at the lagoon or wait until the next morning.

Day 10 – Blue Lagoon - Home
Consider lunch at the lagoon or travel the rugged Reykjanes coast before heading to Keflavík airport for return flight to US. The Blue Lagoon is located within a 15-minute drive of the airport. Drop off rental car at the rental car return lot next to the arrivals side of the main terminal. Check-in is recommended two hours before the flight departure time.

Feel free to add a day or two to this itinerary. For flight departures to Europe, the final day in Iceland may require adjustments. Check with IST for options and costs.
