Bus Service - Scheduled city and countrywide services

Reykjavík - The Reykjavík Municipal Bus Company (SVR) provides visitors a pleasant and convenient way to reach all parts of the capital by bus. Whether you want to visit museums, dine out, go for a swim, visit the City's picturesque sights or simply enjoy the sights from a bus, SVR gets you there on time and inexpensively.

The buses start running at 7AM on Monday through Saturday and at 10AM on Sundays and holidays. Service concludes at midnight except for night buses, which run until 4AM on weekends. During the daytime buses usually arrive at 10-15 minute intervals at each stop.

The fare is IKR 150 (about $1.75). Exact change or tickets are required. Ticket books can be acquired from the driver or at the various bus stations in town. Transfers are possible for one fare if you ask the driver to provide you with a transfer ticket for the next bus.

Routes and schedules can be reviewed at the various bus stations and in some tourist materials provided at hotels and the tourist information center.

Countrywide service - The scheduled bus network in Iceland is operated by independent companies (approximately 22 firms.) The BSÍ bus station off Hringbraut near the airport in Reykjavík is the city departure terminal for buses to the country. This is where you can obtain detailed information, schedules and tickets for all bus services in Iceland. The terminal includes a ticket office, a local travel service company, a baggage storage facility, a restaurant and a 24-hour drive-in food service.

Bus Passes and tickets:

BSÍ offers several ticketing options and these services can be arranged through Iceland Saga Travel.

Bus Passes

Hringmiði/The Full Circle Passport - This pass is valid for one trip around Iceland on the ring road Route #1 with no time limit. You must travel in one direction (clockwise or counter clockwise) while using the pass. There is no limit to the amount of time you stop at a location.

Hringmiði/Westfjords - This pass is The Full Circle Passport with the West Fjords included. This includes passage on the ferry from Stykkishólmur across Breiðafjörður to Brjánslækur and then continuing bus service to Ísafjörður.

Tímamiði/The Omnibus Passport - This pass is available in 1, 2, 3 or 4 week passes and is valid on all scheduled bus routes in Iceland. In the chosen time limit you can travel as much as you like on all scheduled buses.

BSÍ Free and Easy - This is a combination bus pass (listed above) and sleeping bag accommodation vouchers. The traveler can use these vouchers at facilities providing sleeping bag accommodations around the country. A minimum of 7 sleeping bag accommodation vouchers must be purchased.

BSÍ Passes in combination with the following services:

  • Icelandic Farm Holidays accommodations (same terms as Free and Easy - IST can pre-book accommodations.)
  • Icelandic Youth Hostels accommodations (same terms as Free and Easy - IST can pre-book accommodations.)
  • Camping accommodations at approximately 110 camping sites (same terms ad Free and Easy - check with BSÍ for bookings.)

    Important to know - Each bus pass has a map of the bus/ferry routes permitted. These passes are not good for city travel in Reykjavík, Akranes, Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Akureyri or Ísafjörður. Transfer from Keflavík airport to Reykjavík can be used as part of the Omnibus if purchased beforehand and inclusive of the date of arrival or the fare for the transfer can be refunded when picking up the Omnibus pass at BSÍ in Reykjavík.

    Combination Fly/Bus Trips can be scheduled with IST. Scheduled bus service is provided one way and scheduled Air Iceland air services are provided in the other direction. These services are available for travel to and from Akureyri, Ísafjörður (including ferry service one way), Egilsstaðir and Höfn.

    BSÍ Mountain Bike Rental can be rented by the day all year round. Contact IST for details. BSÍ passes include discounts for bike rental. There is an additional fee for taking a bike on a bus and on rare occasions there may be no room for a bike.

    Scheduled Ferry Service in Iceland

    Baldur Ferry - Cross Breiðafjörður bay between Stykkishólmur on the north coast of Snæfellsnes peninsula and Brjánslækur on the south coast of the West Fjords. Stops are made at Flatey island. The crossing takes 3 hours. For auto bookings, advanced reservations are required. The Reykjavík-Stykkishólmur and Brjánslækur-Ísafjörður buses connect with the ferry.

    Sæfari Ferry - Akureyri-Dalvík-Grímsey Island and back through beautiful Eyjafjörður in northern Iceland. The trip takes 7 hours roundtrip, twice a week during summer months. No vehicles.

    Herjólfur Ferry - This is the daily ferry service to and from Vestmannaeyjar/Westman Islands and takes 2 hours 45 minutes. For auto bookings, advanced reservations are required. The Reykjavík-Þorlákshöfn bus connects to the ferry and operates all year.
